Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced today that it will host an initial consultation with Tribal leaders next month. In addition to recognizing, honoring, and strengthening the nation-to-nation relationship, this consultation will help ensure that efforts of the Biden-Harris Administration, including OPM, are inclusive of Tribal Nations’ priorities and recommendations.

Today’s actions will open the door for open communications with Tribal governments following President Biden’s Memorandum on Tribal Consultation and Strengthening Nation-to-Nation Relationships, which states that the Biden-Harris administration is committed to honoring Tribal sovereignty and including Tribal voices in policy deliberations that affects Tribal communities.

“We in the Federal Government take seriously our responsibility to work with Tribal Nations and we all believe that strong, open and honest communication is fundamental to a constructive relationship. We look forward to our initial discussion and continued conversations with Tribal Nations,” said Kathleen McGettigan, Acting Director of the Office of Personnel Management.

OPM has released a public notice and shared additional guidance to facilitate a purposeful and fruitful process. Senior OPM officials look forward to hearing Tribal leaders’ suggestions around federal human resources policies and programs, including identifying best practices to improve consultation and sustain strong partnerships with Tribal governments.

The session will be conducted virtually by OPM’s Office of Congressional, Legislative, and Intergovernmental Affairs with Tribes nationwide on Friday April 16, 2021, from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm Eastern Time.
