Jen Mason serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Ms. Mason's primary responsibility includes overseeing the Governmentwide Veterans Employment Initiative. This initiative underscores to Federal agencies the importance of recruiting and training veterans, aims to increase the employment of veterans within the Executive Branch, and helps recently hired veterans adjust to service in a civilian capacity. In addition, she is responsible for managing the efforts of the administration's Hiring Reform Initiative which is aimed towards improving the timeliness and effectiveness of the Federal hiring process.
Ms. Mason is the OPM representative on the White House Council on Women and Girls whose mission is to provide a coordinated Federal response to the challenges confronted by women and girls. Additionally, she is working closely with the White House Office to prevent Violence Against Women. Prior to joining the OPM team Ms. Mason served as part of the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Committee as the Illinois Liaison. She previously served as the Acting State Director and the Director of Constituent Services for President Barack Obama when he was a United States Senator for the State of Illinois from 2005-2008. In the U.S. Senate Ms. Mason portfolio included Veterans Services and benefits, housing, and social security issues. As a result Ms. Mason first began working for President Obama as his District Director when he first began his political career as Illinois State Senator of the 13th Legislative District on the South Side of Chicago back in 1998. Ms. Mason was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and attended Northern Illinois University where she studied Education and History.
