I have a bank account in my name and in my dependents name. How do I report this?
It depends upon whose social security number is on the account and who receives the 1099 form reflecting the interest received during the year. If it is your SSN, then the account should be reported on the filer's screen, and select codes Filer and Dependent child. If the account is in your dependent's SSN, then it should be reported on the Dependent child screen, and select codes Dependent child and Filer.
I have a savings account and a certificate of deposit at my credit union; do I list the balances in the Bank Accounts section or the Investment Accounts section?
The Bank Accounts section should be completed to report all accounts held at bank and/or credit unions.
My parents have a bank account and my name is also on the account; do I have to report this in the Bank Accounts section of the FDF?
Yes. You should report this because your name is on the account. You should also provide comments in the Additional Comments field explaining the fact that your name is on an account with your parents, noting approximately how frequently and how much money you deposited and withdrew from that account during the calendar year.
If my name is listed on a relative's bank account, CDs, etc. must I report them?
Yes. You must report them and you should also provide details about the account and your relationship in the Additional Comments field.
Where do I report my foreign bank account?
Foreign bank accounts are reported in the Bank Accounts section by selecting "Foreign" within the US/Foreign Indicator block and also providing the address, including country and year-end balance converted into US dollars.
My family has numerous accounts at the same federal credit union. Do I have to enter the address each time?
Yes, list the federal credit union address the first time and then enter "Same" for subsequent account addresses for the number, street and city. You will have to reenter the state and zip code.
