INDIVIDUAL CAREER COUNSELING

To facilitate the successful transition for employees affected by downsizing
activities, the Office of Personnel Management can provide the following
services on a consultant basis, either hourly or per employee cost basis.
The services can include:
- One-on-one coaching of individuals on how to best use the Federal Employment
Information System touchscreen and electronic employment bulletin board
systems for successful job search
- Assisting individuals on how to interpret system information and respond
to vacancy announcements
- Identifying individual job skills and preferences
- Administer relevant interest and skills inventory assessment tools
- Identify possible job retraining
- Conducting evaluations of individual's work/education background to
identify potential occupations for employment consideration
- Identifying potential employment resources
- Identify available public and private sector resources (placement assistance
and hotlines)
- Advising on job search and interviewing
- Networking
- Etiquette (e.g., importance of resume cover letters, thank-you letters,
appearance, etc.)
- Techniques
- Researching relevant literature
- Protocol
- Writing resumes/applications (how to best present employment/education
history)
- Prototypes of different styles of resumes (skill based versus chronological)
- Federal application process versus resumes
