Frequently Asked Questions Insurance

As a Member of Congress and designated congressional staff, am I entitled to a 31-day extension of coverage when my current OPM-contracted health plan coverage terminates on December 31, 2013?

The purpose of the 31-day extension is to provide time for enrollees to select another health plan when their current OPM-contracted FEHB coverage is terminated. If you choose not to enroll in a health benefits plan via the DC SHOP with a Government contribution, an additional 31 days of coverage is included at no cost to you after the date that your current OPM-contracted FEHB enrollment is terminated. If you do choose to enroll in a health benefits plan via the DC SHOP with a Government contribution, your SHOP enrollment will be effective January 1, 2014 and the 31-day extension of coverage will not apply.
