This group includes positions the duties of which are to advise on, manage, or provide instructions and information concerning the operation, maintenance, and use of equipment, shops, buildings, laundries, printing plants, power plants, cemeteries, or other Government facilities, or other work involving services provided predominantly by persons in trades, crafts, or manual labor operations. Positions in this group require technical or managerial knowledge and ability, plus a practical knowledge of trades, crafts, or manual labor operations.
Throughout the following information, an asterisk (*) stands for series with a published standard and a double asterisk (**) stands for series with a published flysheet.
Series in this group are:
GS-1601 - General Facilities and Equipment Series*
This series covers positions involving: (1) a combination of work characteristic of two or more series in the Equipment, Facilities, and Services Group when no other series is appropriate for the paramount knowledge and abilities required for the position; or (2) other equipment, facilities, or services work properly classified in this group for which no other series has been established.
GS-1630 - Cemetery Administration Series*
This series includes positions the duties of which are to direct, administer, manage, advise on, or supervise the overall operation of one or more Federal cemeteries.
GS-1640 - Facility Management Series*
This series covers positions that involve managing the operation and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and other facilities such as posts, camps, depots, power plants, parks, forests, and roadways. Such work requires (1) administrative and management skills and abilities; and (2) broad technical knowledge of the operating capabilities and maintenance requirements of various kinds of physical plants and equipment. While positions in this series typically involve directing work performed by a variety of trades and labor employees and require specialized knowledge of such work, they do not have as their paramount qualification requirement an intensive knowledge of the specific trades skills utilized.
GS-1654 - Printing Management Series*
This series includes all positions that involve planning, administering, supervising, reviewing, evaluating, or performing work in connection with the management of a program that provides printing services. Characteristic of positions in this series is the application of a knowledge of the instructions that a printer must have before he can reproduce manuscript received for publication; knowledge of the capabilities of printing equipment and processes; and ability to manage a printing production organization. Positions in this series may, in addition, involve supervision of related functions such as editing, illustrating, and distributing printed materials.
GS-1658 - Laundry and Dry Cleaning Plant Management Series*
This series includes all positions the duties of which are to advise on or to manage and direct the operation of a laundry, a dry cleaning plant, or a combined laundry and dry cleaning plant, when the duties require: (1) skill in performing managerial functions associated with the operation of a laundry and/or dry cleaning plants; and (2) a combination of a practical knowledge of laundry and/or dry cleaning equipment and processing operations.
GS-1667 - Steward Series
This series includes all classes of positions the duties of which are to manage, supervise, or perform work involved in the operation of the food supply service of a government institution, including storeroom, kitchen, dining room, meat shop, and bakery.
GS-1670 - Equipment Specialist Series*
This series includes positions the duties of which are to supervise or perform work involved in: (1) collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and developing specialized information about equipment; (2) providing such information together with advisory service to those who design, test, produce, procure, supply, operate, repair, or dispose of equipment; and/or (3) developing, installing, inspecting, or revising equipment maintenance programs and techniques based on a practical knowledge of the equipment, including its design, production, operational and maintenance requirements. Such duties require the application of an intensive, practical knowledge of the characteristics, properties, and uses of equipment of the type gained from technical training, education and experience in such functions as repairing, overhauling, maintaining, construction, or inspecting equipment.
