This job family includes occupations involved in general or specialized farming operations; gardening, including the general care of grounds, roadways, nurseries, greenhouses, etc; trimming and felling trees; and propagating, caring for, handling, and controlling animals and insects, including pest species.
Throughout the following information, an asterisk (*) stands for series with a published standard and a double asterisk (**) stands for series with a published flysheet.
Occupations in this family are:
5002 Farming
This occupation includes jobs involved in producing food and feed crops or plants on a general farm or in an agricultural research or experimental setting. The work includes plowing, tilling soil, planting, transplanting, cultivating, irrigating, pruning, spraying, fertilizing, harvesting, and storing farm products. May also include, in addition to general farm work, caring for, breeding, feeding, and butchering livestock raised for food purposes; building and maintaining fences; operating farm equipment; and maintaining farm buildings.
5003 Gardening*
This occupation includes jobs requiring knowledge of gardening procedures and skill in growing and tending lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees. The work includes preparing soil for plants, seeding, thinning, transplanting, trimming, pruning, fertilizing, aerating, mulching, spraying, dusting of grass, ground cover, flowers, shrubs, and trees.
5026 Pest Controlling*
This occupation includes jobs requiring knowledge of pest species and the ability to locate and recognize them and to use toxic materials and other measures for their control. The pests controlled typically include insects, small animals, birds, and parasites (may also include fungus growths) that are injurious to plants, materials, or buildings or detrimental to human health, activities, or comfort. The work is performed in urban, rural, and industrial areas in and around buildings, open fields, forests, and watered areas.
5031 Insects Production Working*
This occupation includes jobs involved in reproducing, collecting, treating (as with radiation) and caring for insect collections. The work requires practical knowledge of the characteristics of insects and their needs, and skill in observing and handling them.
5034 Dairy Farming
This occupation includes jobs involved in operating a dairy farm, including caring for, feeding, and breeding the dairy herd; cleaning, washing, and maintaining sanitary conditions throughout the physical plant; sterilizing, adjusting, maintaining, and operating milking machines; preparing feed and feeding the dairy herd; pasteurizing, sterilizing, cooling, weighing, bottling, and storing milk; protecting the animals pertaining to production; and making minor repairs to buildings and equipment.
5035 Livestock Ranching/Wrangling
This occupation includes jobs involved in operating livestock ranch, including rounding up livestock on ranges for branding, castrating, vaccinating, and marketing; and maintaining fences, traps, and water supply for livestock. Requires riding horses that are not of a gentle nature and using a lariat with accuracy. This occupation also includes jobs involved in gathering stray and trespass livestock from the Federal range and assisting with counting cattle or sheep on the Federal range.
5042 Tree Trimming and Removing
This occupation includes jobs involved in trimming, topping, and cutting down trees on roadways, grounds, parks, or other public lands. Includes thinning, pruning, trimming, and cutting away dead branches or excess branches from large trees, felling and cutting up trees, and removing stumps. Requires knowledge of ropes, knots, rigging, and hitches; climbing trees; and operating equipment such as chainsaws, motorized winches, block and tackle, and shredder-grinder machines.
5048 Animal Caretaking*
This occupation includes jobs that involve providing care for mammals, reptiles, birds, and fish. This work requires knowledge of the animals' characteristics, needs, and behavior, and skill in observing, handling, and controlling them.
