OPM Director Kay Coles James Announces e-Scholar Portal of Educational Opportunities for Students Increases Value to Over $1 Billion

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) e-Scholar website increased to over $1 billion, the total value of educational programs available. The website, www.studentjobs.gov/e-scholar.asp, linked from OPM's USAJOBS website, www.usajobs.gov, contains hundreds of Federal educational scholarships, fellowships, grants, internships, and cooperative programs.

"This is one-stop shopping for those who are interested in accessing Federal educational opportunities," stated OPM Director Kay Coles James. "E-Scholar is an effective venue for students interested in serving their nation, and another means to attract the best and brightest to government service. Parents, professors, career counselors and students have been provided a unique resource through this initiative."

New programs are posted daily, enabling browsers to find a program that best meets their needs. Currently, just over 400 educational programs are available on the one-stop website.

"Each participating Federal agency links their educational programs to the e-Scholar website," remarked Claire Gibbons, USAJOBS project manager. Some available programs include the NASA Scholars Program scholarship, the Centers for Disease Control Bioterrorism Internship and Fellowship Program, and grants for study in science and technology among other disciplines. "We work on a continual basis to provide as many Federal educational opportunities on the e-Scholar website as possible," added Gibbons.

OPM is using e-Scholar to forge a relationship it hopes will take students directly to careers in the civil service. "OPM's goal for e-Scholar is to promote a connection between Federal educational funds, Federal agencies, and potential Federal employees everywhere," stated James.

"We created e-Scholar to encourage a new generation of leaders to work for the Federal Government. This website provides more exposure to the educational opportunities available by the Federal Government and encourages students to consider Federal careers."

E-Scholar is a component of the OPM USAJOBS website. Since its re-launch last August, the USAJOBS website has had more than 42 million visitors, over 414 million pages viewed (hits), and almost 400 thousand online resumes created.
