Washington, D.C. - U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Linda M. Springer today announced OPM is sponsoring a Federal Career Day at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA to showcase the many thousands of career opportunities available in the Federal civil service. The career day will be held Wednesday, November 15 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the University Center on campus. Students from colleges throughout the Greater Pittsburgh area are invited and encouraged to attend.

"With more than 22,000 jobs available, and more expected to open due to retirements and attrition over the next decade, we are reaching out to the most talented students from schools such as Carnegie Mellon to show them what the Federal government has to offer," Director Springer said. "No matter what your educational background, or where your interest may lie, a rewarding career opportunity exists in the Federal civilian workforce."

The Federal Career Day will feature exhibits from approximately 80 Federal agencies highlighting immediate job needs. Representatives will be on hand to explain potential opportunities, provide guidance on how to apply, and answer any questions. Although special emphasis is being placed on occupations where needs are highest, such as those in engineering, science, and the medical field, Springer said needs are much broader.

"We need talent at all levels of the Federal government," Springer said. "We want all students interested in a challenging and exciting career to bring their skills to the table."

The Career Day at Carnegie Mellon is co-sponsored by a consortium of 11 professional schools and programs within Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, and the University of Pittsburgh.

Springer said OPM has been working to recruit the next generation of Federal civilian workers. Television ads produced by OPM have aired in markets across the United States, encouraging college students and young professionals to consider serving in the Federal workforce. These ads aired for two weeks in the Pittsburgh media market in September.

Other Federal Career Days have been held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA; The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH; and New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM.
