Washington, D.C. - U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Linda M. Springer today announced OPM is sponsoring a Federal Career Day at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM to showcase the many thousands of career opportunities available in the Federal civil service. The career day will be held Wednesday, November 15 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Corbett Center Ballroom. Students from colleges other than New Mexico State are also invited and encouraged to attend. The career day is co-sponsored by the New Mexico Consortium of Career Educators and Employers.

"With a looming retirement wave, and thousands of critical positions to be filled, we are reaching out to the brightest students from schools such as New Mexico State to show them everything a Federal career has to offer," Director Springer said. "No matter what your educational background or experience, a rewarding career opportunity exists in the Federal civilian workforce."

The Federal Career Day will feature exhibits from dozens of Federal agencies highlighting immediate job needs. Representatives will be on hand to explain potential opportunities and answer any questions. Although special emphasis is being placed on occupations where needs are highest, such as those in engineering, science, and the medical field, Springer said needs are much broader.

"We need talent in every facet of the Federal government," Springer said. "We look for all students interested in a challenging and exciting career to bring their skills to the table."

Springer said OPM has been working to recruit the next generation of Federal civilian workers. Television ads produced by OPM have aired in markets across the United States, encouraging college students and young professionals to consider serving in the Federal workforce. These ads aired for two weeks in the Las Cruces media market in late August and early September.

Other Federal Career Days have been held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA; The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH; and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.
