Proposal to Amend Family and Medical Leave Act to Include Care for Wounded Service Members

***MEDIA ADVISORY***

OPM to Hold Media Briefing:

Washington, D.C. -- On Wednesday, August 26 at 2:30 p.m. (ET), OPM will hold a telephone media briefing on a proposal that would provide eligible federal employees with 26 "administrative workweeks" of unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act to serve as caregivers to service members who are injured in the line of duty while on active duty. OPM's proposal would implement statutory changes made to the Family and Medical Leave Act. The proposal also would amend rules on advancing sick leave to federal workers who care for wounded service members.

The proposal also would update sick leave regulations to support agencies as they plan for possible outbreaks of pandemic influenza or other serious communicable diseases.

The proposal will appear in the August 26 Federal Register.

Media wishing to join OPM's briefing on the proposal to amend the Family and Medical Leave Act are asked to call 1-866-208-9625, provide Confirmation Number 27250171 and identify "Mike Orenstein" as the conference chair.
