Select Development Areas
Now you are ready to target your areas for development, based on your review of your assessment report. It may be that your focus should be on a general competency area. Or, perhaps your development should be more tightly focused on
behavior(s). As you consider what areas require attention, be aware of your strengths, too, and decide if more development in those areas would help you to leverage your capabilities.
Following the steps below ensure that you make optimum use of this tool.
Step 1 . List your target development areas – as many as you wish.
Step 2 . Now, prioritize that list (i.e., highest priority = 1, next highest = 2, and so on)
To help prioritize, consider these factors:
- What did your ratings reveal to be the important job requirements?
- Do your strengths or needs match up with important job requirements?
- Are your personal goals reflected in the priorities you've identified?
Step 3 . From your prioritized list, select up to two or three areas to work on first. (It will be difficult if you try to work on too many development goals at one time.) Of course, be sure that your list is compatible with any organizational, functional, or performance goals that your supervisors have indicated are important.
Step 4 . Begin to create your development plan by adding the two or three priorities to the leadership development plan that can be accessed by clicking on the icon below. As you continue through the rest of this assessment site, be prepared to add components to your plan.
