Hakeem Basheerud-Deen is the Director of Veterans Services and also serves as Executive Director of the Federal Council on Veterans Employment. He came to OPM in 2003 after a distinguished military career.
Hakeem leads the Veterans Services group that supports the Veterans Employment Initiative, which the President established by an Executive Order. In partnership with Federal agencies, Veterans Service Organizations, and other stakeholders, his team does government-wide outreach in recruitment, training, and hiring in an effort to increase the number of veterans employed by the Federal Government.
Hakeem’s group has oversight and program responsibility for the government-wide Veterans’ Recruitment and Employment Strategic Plan, the FedsHireVets.gov website, and other social media sites that provide veterans with Federal employment information.
Prior to this position, Hakeem served as OPM’s Deputy Director of Veterans Services, and as a senior human resources practitioner at the agency. He joined OPM in July 2003 as a Presidential Management Fellow.
After serving for 24 years on active duty with the United States Air Force, Hakeem retired in 2002 as Executive Assistant to the Director of Operations, Headquarters Air Force Space Command, Colorado Springs, Colorado. His area of expertise in the military was Information Management. He served in Europe, the Far East, the South Atlantic, and the Middle East.
Hakeem has a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of Maryland and received a master of arts degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix. He also participated in the John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Senior Executive Fellows Program at Harvard University.
