Mark Sherwin is the Deputy Assistant Director for Field Operations with the National Background Investigations Bureau (NBIB).  As Deputy Assistant Director for Field Operations, Mr. Sherwin leads an organization of investigations professionals that make up the Field Management, Counterintelligence & Field Support Activity, and Operations programs.

The Field Management program includes the federal investigative staff located in all 50 states and overseas. These individuals are responsible for conducting background investigations leading to suitability and security clearance decisions for over 95% of the federal government’s employee and civilian workforce. The Counterintelligence and Field Support Activity identifies possible threats to National Security, liaisons with customer agencies regarding counterintelligence issues, provides counterintelligence training to NBIB employees, and conducts background investigations on subjects located around the world.

Mr. Sherwin started his career in the private sector as an Investigator in the Washington, DC, metro area for a background investigations contractor. He went on to hold a number of positions of increased responsibility, such as Quality Control Officer and Quality Control Manager before starting with NBIB in July 2004.

Mr. Sherwin began his federal career with NBIB in the training group. He served as a Trainer, Team Leader, and the Program Manager for the group tasked with developing and delivering training regimens and tools that continue to evolve with investigative process and policy changes.

In 2008, Mr. Sherwin transitioned to be the Executive Program Director for Case Management. In this position, Mr. Sherwin was responsible for the Case Management program in Boyers, Pennsylvania, and Fort Meade, Maryland. Case Management performed an in-depth quality review of NBIB background investigations to include the processing and closing of various case types. This group was also responsible for conducting the automated database searches for the background investigations program.

In 2010, Mr. Sherwin became the Assistant Director of Operations and assisted in overseeing the Case Management and Field Management programs. In 2012, Mr. Sherwin assumed his current duties.

Mr. Sherwin was raised in Chicora, Pennsylvania. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Sherwin is married to the former April L. Wolfe; they have two sons.
