Mark R. Pekrul

Mark Pekrul is the Deputy Associate Director for Customer Service, Communication and Engagements in the Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) National Background Investigations Bureau (NBIB), the largest provider of background investigations for the Federal Government.  In this role, he is responsible for liaison between NBIB and more than 100 Federal departments and agencies on all matters related to the background investigative process; his organization is the primary conduit of information between and for collaborative partnership among NBIB and the agencies which depend upon it for their background investigation needs.  His responsibilities extend to the management of all Freedom of Information and Privacy Act requests submitted by the public and other interested parties to NBIB, as well as inquiries from members of Congress related to the background investigation program.

Mr. Pekrul’s overarching focus is the communication of NBIB’s "story" - its mission, goals, products and services, successes and challenges – both internally within NBIB and OPM and externally throughout government and beyond, utilizing all available fora.

For nine years before assuming his current position, Mr. Pekrul was the Personnel Security Policy Program Manager at the Department of Energy (DOE), where he oversaw the development and implementation of all agency policies and procedures related to determining individuals’ eligibility for access to classified information.   Because DOE is one of NBIB’s largest investigative customers, he worked closely with NBIB, and the larger Federal community, on all significant matters of reform and modernization in the Security, Suitability and Credentialing space during that time.

Mr. Pekrul worked previously as a program manager for NBIB's predecessor organization in the 2000’s, and as a field investigator for OPM from 1990 to 1998.

A graduate of The American University in Washington, D.C. and a native of Cheshire, CT, he resides in Maryland with his wife and two children.
