I am a federal employee with a security clearance. I am furloughed for the partial government shutdown, and I am afraid this might impact my finances and put my clearance at risk. What should I do?

The directive that governs security clearance adjudications takes into account the financial challenges some employees may experience due to no fault of their own.  It directs personnel security adjudicators to evaluate financial considerations “in the context of the whole person” and to consider whether “the conditions that resulted from the financial problem were largely beyond the person’s control . . . and the individual acted responsibly under the circumstances.”

If you are concerned about your financial situation at any time while a Federal employee, please talk to your agency’s suitability or security office to get agency-specific guidance.
