OPM Continues Outreach to America’s Best and Brightest at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Women’s Colleges

Recruitment Efforts are Part of Director Kay Coles James’ Strategy to Fix the Federal Hiring Process

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) recruitment team continued its nationwide outreach to Historically Black College and University campuses at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia as part of the University’s annual Career Fair. The recruiters, who included Federal employees who are Norfolk State Alumni, were available to dialogue with students about their Federal experience while spreading the message of the noble calling to public service. The fair featured demonstrations of the popular website, the one-stop location where careers in the Federal government are posted, and live workshops that highlighted the many benefits of ‘Working for America’.

“During Black History Month, the OPM recruitment teams were deployed to several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to tell the younger generation the Federal government is where the jobs are,” James said. “Our time at Norfolk State University was another confirmation the best and brightest this nation has to offer are on our college campuses. The campaign was so successful at the HBCUs, we continued into March with a similar outreach to commemorate Women’s History month, taking the same message to predominately women’s universities and colleges across the nation; now is the time to consider a future in public service. ”

Over the past year, OPM Director Kay Coles James initiated and launched successful outreach campaigns and strategies to fix the Federal hiring process; The ‘Working for America’ recruitment fairs, a nationwide tour brought Federal agency human resource specialists face to face with almost 100,000 job seekers and the newly updated USAJOBS website boasts enhanced features making job search and navigating process simpler for the job seeker. Since its launch August of 2003, the USAJOBS website has logged 45 million visits and 419,903 new resumes created by job seekers; record numbers for a website of its caliber in both Federal and commercial sectors.
