Three New Fed Recruiting Ads Premiere in Raleigh
One ad features Iraq war veteran turned DHS official
Washington, D.C..- A new chapter in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's television campaign to attract new talent to the Federal workforce opened this week in Raleigh, North Carolina, where three new ads are making their debut as part of the innovative recruitment effort.
Among the ads showing for the first time is a spot featuring a wounded veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom who "wondered what he could do" after returning home and being discharged. Former U.S. Army Captain Alvin Shell -who underwent 20 operations to recover from the injuries he suffered in Iraq- found he could continue to serve his country as a security specialist, with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
"I might have changed uniforms, but I believe in protecting America. It's still what I do," says Shell in the ad, taped at the DHS headquarters complex in Washington, D.C. Two of the other new ads in the now 8-part OPM series feature a U.S. State Department Foreign Service Officer and a lead civilian engineer for the U.S. Navy's Advanced Hawkeye (airborne radar) Program.
Upon announcing the new spots, OPM Director Linda Springer emphasized that "this series of ads, which we've entitled ‘What did you do at your job today?', is having a terrific impact in raising awareness about -and spurring interest in- the wonderful spectrum of vitally important and rewarding careers available in the Federal government." Springer noted that since OPM launched the campaign last year, the Federal government's central jobs website, www.usajobs.gov, has seen a spike of tens of thousands of additional visits from residents living in the media markets where the ads have aired.
In addition to helping to recruit new talent to the nation's civilian workforce, Springer pointed out the ads "also serve to showcase the impressive variety of services performed every day by Federal employees." OPM's ad campaign features actual Federal employees, drawn from a wide variety of professions and Federal agencies. The campaign will run in the Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina media market from March 19 through April 8.
