About Us

In 2009, Executive Order 13518 (external link), Employment of Veterans in the Federal Government, established the Veterans Employment Initiative and OPM created its Veterans Programs Office and the affiliated Feds Hire Vets website to provide strategic leadership and direction for the Initiative. Additionally, the Executive Order established the Council on Veterans Employment, the 24 agency Veterans Employment Program Offices and other initiatives to assist in the hiring and retention of military veterans

The Veterans Programs Office is located under OPM’s Workforce Policy and Innovation Division and works across the Federal Government to maximize the number of veterans, transitioning military service members, military spouses and family members employed and retained in the civil service.

Managed by the Veterans Programs office, the Feds Hire Vets website is the single site for Federal employment information for Veterans, transitioning military service members, military spouses, family members and Federal hiring officials. This website is a critical component of the Federal Government’s strategy for the recruitment and employment of veterans.

In addition to Executive Order 13518, Employment of Veterans in the Federal Government, the Veterans Programs Office also assists in the administration of the Military Spouse Noncompetitive Appointing Authority and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility in the Federal Workforce Executive Orders.

Expand opportunities to hire and retain veterans, transitioning military service members and their families who have the experience, skills and competences the Federal Government needs.
