When evaluating a candidate's responses to structured interview questions, can we record in the notes or include in the interview scoring on the candidate’s demeanor -- for example, if he or she is very rude or condescending, indicating the person may be difficult to work with?
No; the purpose of the structured interview notes and scoring is to record what applicants say, document their responses to job-related questions, and provide a fair and consistent scoring methodology. Any reference to an applicant's personal appearance, characteristics, etc., cannot be used in scoring the interview and is, therefore, unnecessary and may invite a legal challenge (i.e., difficult to defend if challenged).
