Changing Health Plans

  If you are an annuitant or an employee who waived premium conversion, you can change from a Self and Family enrollment to a Self Only enrollment at any time. If you are an employee, your youngest child turning age 26 is a qualifying life event (QLE) permitting you to change your FEHB enrollment outside of Open Season.  With this QLE, you can change from Self and Family to Self Only coverage.  You do not need to wait until the next Open Season to make this change; however, you need to request the change to Self Only coverage within 60 days of your child turning 26.

  Your plan's premiums will not decrease due to your family getting smaller, just as the premiums did not increase because you added children and your family grew. Federal law permits you to choose between two options: a Self Only enrollment or a Self and Family enrollment. Other coverage types such as Self and Spouse, Self and One Child (or two children, three children, etc.), and Self Plus One are not permitted under Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) law.

  No. For FEHB and FEDVIP, if you and your eligible family members are satisfied with the coverage that you have now, then you do not have to do anything.  Keep in mind that premiums and benefits change each year, so you should check the plan brochures.  All FEHB and FEDVIP plan brochures are on our website at www.opm.gov/healthcare-insurance/.

  No.  FEHB law does not permit any exclusions or waiting periods for pre-existing conditions in any plan in the FEHB Program.  This is also true if you change plans after you retire.

• Can we enroll online without going to our human resource person? If we keep the same healthplan, do we need to do anything? View more
  Maybe, some agencies have their own system where you can make an enrollment change online.  Your human resources office will let you know if your agency will let you make an online enrollment change or if you must complete a Health Benefits Election Form (SF 2809) which is available on our website.  They will let you know how to find and use your online enrollment system.   – If you decide to stay under the same FEHB enrollment, you do not need to do anything.

• Is there a minimum amount I have to put into a flexible spending account?  Is there a minimum amount I have to spend before I can file a claim for reimbursement? View more
  Each flexible spending account has a minimum contribution of $250 per year.  FSAFEDS has a minimum reimbursement threshold of $25.  If you file a claim for an eligible expense less than $25, FSAFEDS will process your claim and send you a statement, but you will not be reimbursed until you file another claim and your aggregate claims total at least $25.
