20,000 Americans post new resumes on first day
Washington D.C.U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Kay Coles James today announced that more than one million people visited the new USAJOBS website in its first week. This is an immediate increase of twenty-five percent since July.
“This is remarkable,” James said. “I have asked my e-Government team to respond quickly to user suggestions, concerns and questions and they have already begun the process of incorporating changes to the site. This phase of the overall USAJOBS rollout is our opportunity to make the site user-friendly to encourage the recruitment of the best and the brightest to the federal civil service. Simultaneously, OPM is encouraging agencies to streamline and expedite their hiring decisions to reduce the time it takes agencies to hire new employees.”
The numbers show that more than sixteen million pages have been viewed in the first five days of the new website and that there are approximately 17,000 federal jobs available. Twenty-thousand additional resumes were added to the website in its first day in service.
James further stated, “The revised USAJOBS website provides an important avenue to bring new talent into the civil service system. Using the best practices of leading private sector job websites, individuals will find the process is a significant improvement for the federal government – another milestone met in President George W. Bush’s e-Government reform agenda. While the process is being streamlined, prospective employees can be assured that the federal government is 100 percent committed to the principles of the merit system, such as veterans’ preference, which makes our civil service a model for many other nations.”
Norm Enger, OPM’s e-Government Program Director stated, “The new USAJOBS website is a win for job seekers who want to work for the federal government but have found the process too cumbersome. It is a win for the agency mangers who need to fill openings with qualified applicants. And it is a win for the American people who expect the government to effectively manage the federal work force.”
The USAJOBS website is the one-stop source for federal jobs and employment information for the federal government. The revamped website features a quicker job- search engine, sorting capacities, and accessibility for disabled users. Other new features include storage for up to five online resumes, a personal career management home, an option to make resumes searchable by agency recruiters, and an opportunity to create and save application letters.
OPM oversees the federal work force and provides the American public with up-to-date employment information. OPM also supports U.S. agencies with personnel services and policy leadership including staffing tools, guidance on labor-management relations and programs to improve work force performance.
