Pre-Supervisory Leadership

The path to becoming a top notch leader is one which requires constant attention and fine tuning whether we are grooming to lead small groups, large teams or simply preparing for next steps in a leadership role.   Useful tools and tips may be found on a vast array of subject matter relating to the extremely important role as a Supervisor or Pre-Supervisor.

OPM present’s “Difficult Conversations for Supervisors”

This online and interactive course is intended to support the requirements in 5 CFR 412.202, allowing new and current supervisors to explore different ways to conduct that “difficult conversation” with their employee(s).  Supervisors will learn various techniques and tools to facilitate the effectiveness of discussions with subordinates of s sensitive nature and practice in a safe and risk free environment.

This course is available to all agencies at no cost.  Agency staff may upload the course to their Learning Management Systems from our Shared Courses Wiki page located under OPM Training and Development.  Agencies may also request a CD.  To request a CD, contact Karen.Simpson@opm.gov.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) sponsors the Leadership Development Program, which is a  wonderful resource that has been shared with us.  The program includes a 180 degree assessment and an online supervisory resource center.  Attached are resources from USPTO's leadership development group you may use to assist in developing your leadership development program.

Find Opportunities:
Mentoring can be a truly effective means of not only assisting in guiding a coworker or colleague, but can also serve to teach the mentor a variety of skills.  It gives the Mentor the opportunity to lead by example, by providing guidance, and by holding the mentee accountable for their commitment.  A mentee benefits by being able to address concerns regarding his/her professional development in a variety of collaborative ways.  All of these can be powerful self-teaching, developmental tools.
