How do I enroll?

You enroll by completing SF 2817 “Life Insurance Election” and submitting it to your Human Resources Office. (Some agencies allow electronic enrollment. Check with your Human Resources Office to see whether this is available to you).

Coverage for Optional insurance is effective the first day you are in a pay and duty status after you submit the election to your Human Resources Office.

It is important to check your Leave and Earnings Statement (pay stub) to see if your election has been processed. If you do not have the coverage you believe you should have received, contact your Human Resources Office, not OPM.

For the Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Program, no individual “policy” is issued. Your copy of the SF 2817 “Life Insurance Election”, and the FEGLI Program Booklet is your certificate of proof of insurance.

You do not have to reenroll every year. Your coverage continues automatically each year unless you change it.
