ICYMI: OPM Director Kupor Discusses Tech Force on Fox Business
WASHINGTON, DC — US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Scott Kupor appeared on Fox Business to discuss the administration’s launch of the U.S. Tech Force, a new initiative aimed at strengthening the federal workforce with top technical talent and modernizing critical government systems.
On modernizing federal technology and systems:
“Look, the key to the economic growth of the country is technology and AI, and we also want to make sure the government has the right talent to make sure we can modernize government along with this AI development. So, what we have launched is a group called Tech Force. This is a public private partnership where we're going to bring a thousand great engineers into government to help us complete the modernization that is so important to our American people and so important to making sure that technology is a first citizen inside of government.”
On how Tech Force works:
“…[E]very major agency in government has signed up to take people as part of Tech Force. They’ll work at HHS on various things. They’ll work at Treasury. At Department of War, all across government. And then what we’re going to do is run a program around it. So, we’ll have speaker series, career development opportunities, engagement with our private sector partners, and at the end of the two-year program, we expect that many of those people will go into the private sector and take the skills they learn in government and have fantastic private sector careers.”
On competing for top technical talent:
“…[W]e have a very heavy reliance on contractors and consultants. As you may know, we don’t have as much homegrown talent in…core AI, modern software development. And tech force is really intended to make sure that the government can be a first-class citizen and attract those types of individuals… But we also want to make sure that talent is resident in government long term.”
