Frequently Asked Questions Retirement

How are survivor benefits handled for former spouses?

A former spouse could potentially be awarded a survivor benefit per the court ordered documents. If the court order stipulates the former spouse is entitled to a survivor benefit this information will be documented in our system and an approval letter will be mailed to the retiree and former spouse. If your former spouse passes away and you are not the retiree, please notify the Survivor Benefits Branch immediately and submit the death certificate at the time of notification. If your former spouse passes away and you are the retiree please notify the Court Ordered Benefits Branch immediately and submit the death certificate at the time of notification.

For more information on survivor benefits, visit Death and Survivor Benefits. For information on court-ordered benefits refer to the Court-Ordered Benefits for Former Spouses brochure.
