Federal civilian annuitants are eligible to enroll in dental and vision insurance under FEDVIP. If enrolled, employees automatically carry FEDVIP coverage into retirement if they retired on an immediate annuity under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS), the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) or another retirement system for employees of the Federal government. Individuals who retire for disability under CSRS, FERS, or another retirement system for employees of the Federal government are also eligible. Federal Civilian Annuitants do not have to be eligible for FEHB coverage. There is no "five year rule" for continuing coverage into retirement like there is in the FEHB health insurance program and the FEGLI life insurance program.

Yes. Your FEDVIP coverage automatically continues when you retire if you are enrolled as an employee. There is no 5-year requirement for continuing FEDVIP into retirement. To be eligible for FEDVIP as a retiree, you must have retired with an immediate annuity (note: a FERS Minimum Retirement Age plus 10 annuity, postponed, counts as an immediate annuity). You can enroll in a FEDVIP dental plan and/or a FEDVIP vision plan for the first time as a retiree, even if you were never enrolled as an employee, as long as you have an immediate annuity.
Those in receipt of a deferred annuity are not eligible to enroll in FEDVIP. Please review Section 1 - Eligibility (Federal Annuitants) of any Dental or Vision plan brochure.
If you are an employee when you die and your survivor(s) are eligible to receive a survivor annuity or a Basic Employee Death Benefit, in most cases they are eligible to continue your FEDVIP enrollment.
